IV Chelation for Heavy Metals

We are exposed to heavy metals everyday in the foods we eat, the water we drink and the air we breath. Heavy metals pose a health threat to everyone living on the planet. Although, a certain amount of heavy metals are essential to life an excess accumulation of them in your body can lead to chronic health problems. We are constantly exposed to an overabundance of heavy metals like aluminum, lead and cadmium. The job of removing these excess heavy metals becomes an important part of reducing your toxin load and living a healthier longer life. EDTA Chelation Therapy What Is EDTA Chelation Therapy? EDTA Chelation Therapy

What Is EDTA Chelation Therapy?

EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) chelation therapy is a medical treatment developed in the mid-20th century to bind certain metals in the bloodstream so they can be eliminated through the kidneys. It was first used in conventional medicine for the treatment of lead poisoning and heavy metal toxicity, where it remains a recognized therapy.

Over time, physicians observed that some patients receiving EDTA chelation experienced improvement in circulation and vascular symptoms, leading to its use in selected cardiovascular conditions.

Conditions Commonly Addressed

At BioCare, EDTA chelation therapy may be considered as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for carefully selected patients, including:

  • Heavy metal toxicity
    • Lead
    • Mercury
    • Cadmium and other toxic metals
  • Cardiovascular and vascular circulation concerns
    • Coronary artery disease / reduced cardiac blood flow
    • History of myocardial ischemia or prior heart attack
    • Carotid artery vascular disease
    • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
    • Leg pain with walking (claudication) due to poor circulation

Chelation therapy is not a substitute for emergency cardiac care, surgical intervention, or appropriate conventional vascular management, but may be considered as an adjunctive option in selected patients.

How Treatment Works

EDTA is administered intravenously over several hours in a carefully monitored setting. The treatment binds metals and may help reduce oxidative stress and vascular injury associated with certain toxic exposures and chronic vascular disease.

Protocols are individualized based on the patient’s history, symptoms, vascular condition, and laboratory assessment.

Expected Number of Treatments

Treatment requirements vary depending on the condition being addressed:

Heavy Metal Detoxification

  • Mild to moderate burden: 10–20 treatments
  • More significant toxic burden: 20–40+ treatments

Cardiovascular / Peripheral Vascular Disease

  • Initial therapeutic course: 20–30 treatments
  • More advanced vascular disease: 30–50 treatments
  • Maintenance therapy may be recommended in selected cases

Many vascular patients begin noticing symptomatic improvement after approximately 15–25 treatments, although response varies.

A Brief Historical Perspective

EDTA chelation gained prominence in the 1950s after its successful use in industrial heavy metal poisoning. By the 1960s and beyond, physicians interested in vascular medicine began exploring its broader applications in circulatory disease.

Chelation therapy has now been used for decades by physicians experienced in integrative and preventive cardiovascular care.

Is Chelation Right for You?

If you have concerns about toxic metal exposure, circulation problems, leg pain with walking, or vascular disease, our office can help determine whether EDTA chelation therapy may be an appropriate part of your care plan.
